LAST NIGHT’S TELEGRAMS. (Per Press Association.) Invercargill, ' Juno 29. Sir James Carroll, who, with the Hon. Dr. Ngata, M.P., and others,, arrived from the north last night, went to Riverton to-day, and speaks there to-night'. To-morrow night Sir James Carroll will speak in the theatre 'here. Christchurch, June 29. The net earnings from- the operation of the Christchurch tramways for the.year ending March 31st lust were £44,500, and afteru deduction of interest, sinking fund, depreciation, lire and accident reserve, and renewals fund, there was a surplus of £2219. Mr. Geo. F. Booth has been elected chairman, and Mr. J. A. Flcsher deputy-chairman. The passengers carried totalled 13,710.890, an increase on the previous year of 1,034,114. Nelsnri,' Juno 29. An enquiry into the circumstances surrounding a fire which destroyed the stables of F. Haase ; on June sth,> together with four horses and a valuable carriage plant, was concluded to-day, when the Coroner returned a verdict that the stables were intentionally set on fire, but that, there was no evidence to indicate by whom. At the conclusion of the enquiry, Percy Collier, one of the witnesses, and a former employee of Haase, was arrested on a charge of arson. He was remanded on bail until Wednesday next. Dunedin, June 29. Drs. Champtaloup and Falconer, local health officer and hospital medical superintendent respectively, are inviting a scheme for the treatment of consumption. The measures contemplated are preventive and curative, and include treatment at a sanatorium, tubercular tests at the hospital, a separate ward for advanced cases, employment of a specially trained nurse to visit the homes of the poor under treatment, and advise suspected cases to go to the hospital to bo tested. Provision is also made for more frequent inspection of premises by hospital board inspectors, and for more' frequent notification and re-notifica-tion of cases.
