WEST’S PICTURES. At tiie Town Hall last night West’s Pictures had better lock than last week. The picture machine was in good going order, and the pictures were snown in the best style. The diamatic me tares were “His Trust,” and “Tne Com boy ’s Vindication.” The former tells a pathetic tale of the American Civil War, and the latter is a talc of Western American life, both being full of incident and sensation. Too programme included a line coloured him, “The Ivioday Equilibrists.” This was a line specimen of colonic 1 m .uk, showing some marvellous feats (-1 balancing. Of the instructive orftei was ‘-‘Al'vic.in Industries,” which gave a good illustration of the making of pottery, in Morocco. Tlie/Pathc Gazette was, as usual, informative and interesting, the comic section was well represented'. “Davy Jones’s Do-im-Mic Doubles” was a highly diverting comedy regarding a sailor’s love affairs. Other pictures in this section were “Tim Writes a Poem,” •‘Lea Enlists,” “Tommy’s Trumpet,” “Tontolini and the Dogs,” and “Effecting a Cure.”
HIS MAJESTY’S THEATRE
Owing to the iuclemoucv of- the Weather there was not a large gaidrennsr at Bis Majesty’s on AVednesday flight, when the weekly pictme programme was screened. However, the management was ill no wise put one. realising that at this si mo of the year, when wet and oold weather is,. fie rule rather than the exception, they must expect a falling off in the attendance at times. I ho programme, Which was a capital one, included some fine scenic, dramatic, topical, educational, and comic numbers. ‘'Convict p 76” (drama) elicinting general applause, the acting of (he • l ifFcr»*nt characters being excellent. The. programme was repeated last night when the Theatre was fairly well Idled. CORONATION SKATING RINK. The Royal Hawaiian Singers, who commence their season at the Town Hall on Monday evening next' bring* with them credentials ot tho highest order and present , an entertainment of an unique description. Their recent tour of America was a sequence of brilliant successes by reason of their quaint and distinctly clever Sousa says of the Royal Hawaiians, that their soggp,. their music and-the rhythmic swing flf their dances arc -incomparable, ’'add' create an atmosphere that gives glimpses of a world beyond, while Richard Strauss stated that their singing is quite- apart in. tone and colour from any other race of people with whom ho had come in contact, their music being as full of character as a rainbow is full of colour. The Neapolitan singer has an Italian flavour, the French have their tuneful light Cafe Chantaut Lyrics, and the German a full tone martial style,, but the Hawaiian lias a sparkle and dash combined with a passionate appel and religious fervour that makes the “Eden of the Pacific” into a musical province of its own. The Hawaiian singers are regarded in America as the most attractive combination that ever left tho Islands of tho Pacific. Not only ary the ladies jnd gentlemen of the party people, of high mental Attainment, but possess that culture and refinement in art which always finds appreciation amongst intellectual audiences. The “Hula” Dances are portrayed by beautiful and graceful Hawaiian ladies. who are idealistic in their exposition of the National Dance, while tho singing and the instrumentalitems must make an appeal to the student, scholar, and to all lovers of what is best in music and art. It may be safely said that never has there been hoard in this part of tho world anything to approach the masterful manner in vyhich the whole company handle their mandolins, guitars, and blend them so clevc'rly with their own native ukelcs and other instruments! The prices arc fixed at 3s, 2s, and Is. Seats may be reserved at Grubbs. THE SCARLET TROUBADOURS. FAREWELL VISIT. , At the Town Hall to-night, Mr 'Edward Bran scorn hobs Costume Comedy Company, “The Scarlet Troubadours” from London will commence a short farewell season of two nights. Since ..last visiting us, “The Troubadours” have toured Australasia, New Zealand, and latterly in South. Africa, where tiieir success and popularity has been phenomenal. That Mr Branscombe has hit the popular taste is beyond all doubt, and the clover and versatile performances given by this gifted company sends an audience away with little remembrance of the cares of yesterday or care for the worries of to-morrow. “The Troubadours” revel in their work, and appear to enjoy it.as much ns the audience. They seem to throw out the impression, “You are hero to bo amused—so ask for as much as you want and we are ready to give it.” This manner appeals to the audience in no small way, aitd they are not backward in demanding full measure of the good things provided, and like Oliver Twist—still ask for more. The personnel will ho practically the same as on their last visit, including actors, singers, dancers, and comedians—all in the top rank of their profession. Box plan at Colo’s. Particulars as to prices, etc., will be found in our advertising columns.
