A correspondent writes as follows to t!u> “Waimate "Witness”:—The free and indopcndont did not roll up in any considerable numbers to Mr. Dive’s meeting on Thursday evening. Mr. I). M. Scott occupied tlio chair, and suitably introduced the speaker. Mr. Dive spoke for about three-quar-ters of an hour, his address being on the same lines as his speeches delivered in other parts of the electorate. During the course of his address Mr. Dive offered to stand down as a • candidate at the approaching election , if it was thought that his candidature 1 or his election to the House would in ' any way interfere with the efforts of the people to secure the railway. At j the close of his address, referring to i his remarks as to promises hy Minis- | tors of expenditure in electorates as . a bribe to electors, Mr. DivC was ask-! od if he wished to imply that the Gov-i eminent subsidies towards the throe bridges in the County was intended as a bribe. Mr. Dive replied that ho : did not intend to convey such a moan- i ing. Asked if there would he another j poll the following throe years for restoration if prohibition* ho carried next election, Mr. Dive replied that he could not at the moment say, but would look the matter up. Mr, Dive got a good hearing throughout, though there wore a few interjections, to one of which Mr. Dive replied with a challenge involving the staking of a live-pound note, which, however, was not taken up hy the iaterjector. Mr. Dive received the customary vote of thanks at the close of his address. Considerable surprise was expressed after the mooting when those pres nil, were talking tilings over, at the n-ildnef.a of Mr Dive’s criticism of tiie ! Government. It was generally remarked that when next election comes ! along ho will ho more Government I than Opposition. 1
