A NARROW ESCAPE.
TRAIN STRIKES A BOULDER. (Per Press Association) Palmerston North, Juno 13. A very narrow escape from a serious mishap happened to the last train from VVoodvillo to Palmerston on Monday night, when coming through the Manawatu Gorge, through running into a largo Boulder which had fallen on the lino. Fortunately the train was not travelling very fast at the time, and was quickly pulled up. The cow-catcher was somowhac (Jamaged hy the contact, the stone being smashed into several pieces. The force of the collision was such as to throw the passengers about, but, fortunately, no one was hurt. The spot at which the incident happened is a dangerous one, and had the train been derailed the consequences would have been very serious. DEATH OF MR. R. CLAUDE. THE MAIN TRUNK HERO. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, June 13. Mr. R. Claude, who prevented a number of runaway trucks from dashing into the Main Trunk express on Easter Monday when the Governor was a passenger, died to-day in the hospital after an attack of pleurisy.
