YESTERDAY’S MATCHES. FIRST GRADE. STRATFORD (25) v. ELTHAM (5). Stratford met Eltham, at Eltham, yesterday. Eltham were forced twice in succession soon after the kick-off, and after up and down play, Cameron made a dodgy run, passed half the opposing team ,and scored. Later on, Cameron scored again, being soon followed by Stewart, the score standing at nine points to nil at the close of the first spoil. Soon after the second spell opened, Anderson made a good opening for Stratford, of which .Burgess took full advantage, scoring near the posts. Cameron was successful with-the kick, bringing Stratford’s score up to 14. Then Stratford scored again with a penalty goal, given for off-side play. Hot play continued on the Eltham line, tine 1 , in a rush for the ball Potier palpably committed an infringement by holding Anderson. The referee awarded Stratford a try, holding that a score was inevitable. No goal was kicked, the score being therefore 20. After this, Eltham wakened up somewhat, and play was somewhat brighter. Cameron scored again for Stratford, Burgess sending the oval over the liar, bringing Stratford’s score to 25. Eltham, then put still- more vim into their work, and from a scrum near Stratford’s goal, Cooper took .-.he hall over the line, Potier kicking a goal. East play followed, but no further score was made on either side, the score at the end of the game being 25 to 5 in Stratford’s favour. - j-tt.4 k j. f Mr Spurdle hold the whistle.
CLIFTON (27) v. INGLEWOOD (0)
Clifton met Inglewood'at Inglewood. In the first spell the home forwards more than held their own, though Goodwin scored a try for Clifton, which S. George converted. Play continued in the Home team’s favour for some time until near the end of the spell, when Goodwin scored again, George again adding the major points. In tho second spell t.lio Inglewood forwards slackened down. Goodwin scored a third try, tiie kick at goal failing. A penalty goal, kicked by George soon afterwards, brought Stratford’s score to IG. Tate then scored a try ,which was converted oy George. Later on, Goodwin scored his fourth try. which was not converted. Clifton’s last score was an unconverted try, scored by Tate. Mr W. Kocli was referee.
STRATFORD (11), KLTHAM (8). SECOND GRADE. Stratford and Eltham met on the A. and P. Ground. In the first spell Glcntworth kicked a goal for Eltham. .Hay was of a close nature throughout' the spell, Stratford doing most of tho passing. Soon after the starting of Lao second spoil Whiting broke away from a line-out in Stratford’s twenty-five. He was collared on the line by Crawshaw, but had sufficient pace on to enable him to successfully ground the ball. The kick at goal failed. It looked as if Eltham had only to keep play close to win tho game, but Stratford soon afterwards iponed their scoring account with a penalty goal kicked by Dud Cameron. A lot of tight work followed, Eltham quickly suppressing anything like open play. Stratford wakened up, however, in tho concluding stages of the game. The hall was centred by Stratford in Eltharn’s twenty-five, and C. Crawshaw took it over tho lino-al-most without opposition. Tho major mints wore not added. Towards the end of the game Cameron • landed another penalty goal. Tukapn and Star met on the New Plymouth Recreation Ground, Star winning after a hard-fought struggle by 18 to 10. Tho first spell ended with both teams even, each having •.cored seven points. Of the 28 points •cored in tho game 17 wore tho remits of kicks at goals. Mr H. Pottv was referee.
Clifton defeated Inglewood at Wait'.ra by lo points to nil. THIRD GRADE. Stratford met Eltham at Eltham and won by 9 points to nil, tries bein'"; scored for the winners by Cameron, Marcliant, and Sheehan. Clifton boat Inglewood bv Id points to 8. ASSOCIATION. STRATFORD V. NEW PLYMOUTH Stratford met Xow Plymontli on the Tnkapa ground. Xow Plymouth, yesterday. Xow Plymouth started the game two men short, and soon alter play began Stratford notched two goals. When the Xew Plymouth team was up to its full strength they tonic a baud in affairs and pressed Stratford bard up to half time, though they could not get within scoring distance. In the second spell Xew Plymouth had the hotter of the exchanges but their shooting was weak. Xew Plymouth only scored one goal. Air J. Clark had charge of the game.
