A CONTRADICTION. BRAVERY REWARDED. (Per Press Association.) Waihi, May 31. During a concert last night, attended by 2000 residents, the Mayor referred to a statement made by Mr. Poole, M.P., at a No-license rally in Invercargill, that at one time it was unsafe tor women to walk the streets of Waihi at night. The Mayor emphatically denied the allegation, and moved “That this meeting enter an emphatic protest against Mr. Poole’s unjustifiable remarks.” This was car■ied unanimously, amidst great applause. W. Moran, who bravely rescued a man who was being carried to sea at iJcwontown heads, at Christmas, and ,vho was awarded the Humane Society’s gold medal, was presented by the Mayor, on behalf of the public of Waihi with a gold modal and clasp., Moran kept his companion above water for over two hours. They were eventually hauled ashore in an exhausted condition. A month ago Morin was rendered totally blind by an explosion in a mine. The concert was given, in bis aid.
