LETTERS FROM CAPTAIN AMUNDSEN.
The following letter, written from Madeira by Captain Hoald Amundsen, Captain Scott’s Norwegian rival, in the race for the South Polo, to a member of the committee formed to finance his work in the Arctic, was published in the Norwegian newspapers early in April “You ought to have been told r-mg ago, but 1 did not venture to. I have taken the decision a!?n i. ar.-l must, bear the responsibility alone. Tho Fram 'goes direct south from Madeira into tho Antarctic regions in order to compete with tho Englishman for tho South Pole. Everything is well thought out and worked out, so I have the best hopes for success. “I intend to land with nine of the others. Tho Fram will then go into the Atlantic to carry out oceanographic observations. . In 1912 she will return to fetch us. We shall then touch at New Zealand to telegraph, continuing from there to San Francisco. Kindly convey to tho other memboi s of tho committee my greetings and my apologies for haviing acted independently of them. “We have food enough for tuo years and work enough to look forward to. I send you my last greeting and warm thanks for all that you have done for me. 1 will do all in. my po>ver not to shame you.
