PIPING AND DANCING SOCIETY
Sound Financial Position The society was in a sound financial position, stated the report presented at the annual meeting of the Highland Piping and Dancing Society of Invercargill last night. Mr C. Mackenzie presided over a good attendance of members. The membership had steadily increased and there were many prospective members. The first piping and dancing competitions conducted by the society were held on October 20, 1944. Prize money to the value of £lOO was paid out to competitors from all parts of Otago and Southland and the competitions were a complete success. Eight Scottish concerts were held during the winter.
In proposing the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, Mr Mackenzie recalled that the society had been formed a year ago to further the interests of both piping and dancing in Southland. The results had been verypleasing. They had started with nothing and they now had a credit balance of £509.
Arrangements for the second annual piping and dancing competitions to be held on October 19 were discussed at length. The following office-bearers were elected: President, Mr C. Mackenzie; chief, Mr John Ewan; vice-presidents, Messrs W. J. A. McGregor and T. M. Rankin; secretary and treasurer, Mr C. T. Garrick; directors, Messrs J. L. Birss, A. M. Clark, H. Elder, C. Henderson, G. Miller, L. C. Thompson, W. Waldron, G. McLeod, J. Forrester, D. Pearson, O. Smith, R. Kelman, M. D. Clark, W. Mathews and D. Mcßae.
