NEW METHOD OF NUMBERING

DEMONSTRATION AT • ADDINGTON

A number of Southland pacers are being prepared for the two trotting events on the Otago Hunt Club’s programme next month.

Not Serious Integrity jarred a joint recently and he was allowed to miss his engagements at Addington last week. His owner-trainer, V. Leeming, does not expect the trouble to be serious, and hopes to have him at his best for the spring racing.

Qualified A penalty of 24 yards proved no deterrent to War Guard, who won the National Handicap just as decisively as he accounted for the big race on the first day. The Jack Potts gelding is now eligible for the Trotting Cup. Josedale Grattan

Josedale Grattan again acquitted himself honourably in the National Handicap. The race was not a searching test of stamina, but the American horse gave some encouragement to keep him in commission for the Trotting Cup.

Should Be Improved For a horse who had been off the scene for three or four years, Positive acquitted himself more than creditably in the Queen Mary Handicap. He began smoothly and was never far from the front. The Quite Sure pacer should benefit by the experience. Incorrect

The Timaru Herald states that Royal Dale, winner of the Addington Stakes on Saturday, is the first of Sandydale’s stock to succeed as a straight-out trotter. This is incorrect as Blackdale and Mistydale have both been square trotters to win to the credit of the imported horse.

Knave of Diamonds Knave of Diamonds’s supporters were dismayed when he broke at the start of the National Handicap, and was set an impossible task. Knave of Diamonds is usually a reliable beginner, and it was bad luck for his owner-driver, O. E. Hooper, that he did not get a reasonable opportunity to qualify for the Trotting Cup. Well Back

Gold Bar’s prospects of winning another two-mile race are not bright. He did not burn up the track as of old when he ran to the front in the National Handicap, but he could not respond when tackled by Shadow Maid and Dusky Sound, and he finished at the rear of the bunch.

Sulky Insurance The wisdom of sulky insurance was illustrated after the accident in the Advance Handicap. At least five sulkies were damaged in this accident, .and officials had a busy time in the birdcage taking down particulars of the damage done. Racing sulkies are at a premium at present, and at recent auction sales have brought as much as £7O. American Idea

The plan of numbering horses by a disc on the bridle has been in operation in America for some years, and a demonstration of this method of identification was given between the second and third races at Addington. The numbers are clipped to the bridle, and, although the figures are much smaller than those at present in use, they stand out clearly. With the coming of the photofinish camera, they should be a distinct advantage, and will probably be adopted. To officials and experienced racegoers, numbers are a secondary consideration, because they must be familiar with the colours and, in the case of similarity of colours, with the individual markings of horses, to be able intelligently to follow the running of a race. The numbers used in the demonstration were made by Mr T. McKenzie, of Papanui, who has spent some time in experimenting with different types of discs. Mr McKenzie is a keen trotting enthusiast and raced, among others, a useful pacer in Ginger Jack some years ago.
