OBITUARY
MR HARRY ERLAM The death has occurred at Christchurch of Mr Harry Erlam, of Miramar, Wellington. He was for many years inspector of explosives and dangerous goods in the Internal Affairs Department and was well known in Southland. Born at Ashley, Cheshire, in 1883, and educated at the Manchester District High School, he joined the Royal Navy in 1900, serving on the Mediterranean and South American Stations and also in the Persian Gulf, where he was awarded the Persian Gulf Medal. He came to New Zealand early in 1914, but left again with the Main Body of the Ist New Zealand Expeditionary Force for Gallipoli, where he was at the landing at Anzac, being wounded and commended for gallant action there. He was wounded again in May 1915, at Cape Helles. In 1916 he transferred to the Imperial Army and rose to the rank of captain in the Prince of Wales’s Own South Lancashire Regiment. He was mentioned in dispatches for gallantry in the field in Macedonia, 1917. Repatriated to New Zealand in 1919, he took up farming, but later joined the Public Service in August 1920. Since 1935 he had been in charge of the inspection work under the Explosive and Dangerous Goods Act ’ and Cinematograph Films Act for the South Island. He is survived by his wife, one son. Mr Harry Erlam, and two daughters, Misses Audri and Murree Erlam.
