VIEWS OF M.Ps. ON BANK PROPOSAL

SUPPORT FOR COUNTY PROTEST Replies from three of the four Southland members of Parliament to the resolution of protest by the Southland County Council against the proposal of the Government to take over the Bank of New Zealand were received by the

council at its meeting yesterday. Replies were received from the Hon. Adam Hamilton and Messrs W. M. C. Denham and T. L. Macdonald. “I note that your council enters an emphatic protest against the Government’s proposal to take over the Bank of New Zealand,” wrote Mr Hamilton. “I am in accord with this resolution and shall be pleased to enter my protest and state my opposition to the proposal.” MR DENHAM SURPRISED “It is indeed difficult to understand why the Southland County Council should protest against the proposed banking legislation—it is difficult to understand. However I have passed on your letter to the Minister of Finance (Mr Nash),” wrote Mr Denham. Mr Macdonald’s reply stated: “I am sure you will require no assurance of the Opposition’s hostility to the idea of nationalization. When the legislation dealing with the Bank of New Zealand comes before the House it will be very strongly opposed.”
