ALLOTMENT OF SEATS ON TRAINS

REPLY TO INQUIRY FROM GORE A letter has been received by the secretary of the Gore Chamber of Commerce (Mr R. S. Green) from the district traffic manager of railways, Invercargill, in reply to representations made by the chamber asking for the reservation of' seats on express trains for passengers from the Gore area. The letter states that a number of second-class seats are already allotted the Gore office on the express -train leaving Invercargill for Dunedin at 1.20 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It has been ascertained that this allotment adequately meets all demands. Arrangements are being made for a suitable allocation of first-class accommodation for Gore passengers. Referring to accommodation on the 6.15 a.m. Invercargill-Lyttelton express, the letter states that, having regard to the best possible use of the limited number of seats, it has been considered advisable to maintain central control. The train is the only through express serving the whole of the South Island. Fifty per cent, of the Invercargill accommodation is set aside for country passengers, who have the privilege of making their applications eight days before the travel date, as against seven days allowed those making direct application to the office at Invercargill. Inquiries show that in many instances 60 per cent, of the seats have been allotted to country passengers.
