DRAW FOR MATCHES ON SATURDAY
The following draw for games bn Saturday was approved by the management committee of the Southland Rugby Union last evening:— First Grade.— Pirates-Star v. Collegiate, at Rugby Park, at 1.30 p.m. (Mr C. Anderson); Bluff v. Winton, at Rugby Park No. 2, at 3 p.m. (Mr J. Aitken); Invercargill v. Old Boys, at Rugby Park No. 1, at 3 p.m. (Mr J. North); Marist a bye. Second .Grade.— Invercargill v. Pirates, at Bigger street No. 1, at 1.45 p.m. (Mr P. Goodwich); Ohai v. Hawthorndale, at Biggar street No. 4, at 2.15 p.m. (Mr J. McKenzie); Marist v. Borstal, at Borstal Farm, at 3 p.m. (Mr R. Ferguson). Third Grade.— Kennington v. Borstal, at Borstal Farm, at 2.15 pm. (Mr E. Barron); Bluff v. Old Boys, at Biggar street No. 2, at 2.30 p.m. (Mr J. Miles); Collegiate v. Pirates, at Tweed street, at 1.45 p.m. (Mr F. Fox). Fourth Grade.— lnvercargill v. THANKSGIVING DAY
It was explained that in the event of the victory thanksgiving service at Rugby Park being held on a Saturday all games on that day would not be played. The following transfers were granted:—J. Tappin, Alhambra (Dimedin) to Pirates; M. Finlay, Alhambra to Pirates’ both subject to clearance from the Alhambra club. The committee decided to procure numbers for the jerseys of senior players and to issue a programme weekly at Rugby Park. B. Weeds (Collegiate) was granted a regrade from second grade to third grade.
PROPOSED SPORTS CENTRE
Plans Under Consideration
Plans for a sports centre in Invercargill, covering both indoor and outdoor sports, were submitted to a meeting of the executive of the Southland Council of Sport last evening. One of the sites suggested is in Gala street, a second at Turnbull Thomson Park and a third near the airport. It was decided to refer the plans to the affiliated bodies and to call a full meeting of the council to consider the views expressed. An application from the Southland Wrestling Association for affiliation was approved. Mrs T. Noble, Mrs M. W. Wilson and Messrs H> C. Bradley and S. Douglas were appointed an equipment subcommittee, and- Messrs E. Sutton and V. S. Vial a finance sub-committee.
A sub-committee was appointed to go into the question of establishing youth hostels in Southland and to get in touch with the organizations likely to be interested in the proposal. Mr E. Sutton was appointed a delegate to attend the annual meeting of the National Council of Sport to be held in Wellington this month.
GOLF
COMPETITIONS CONDUCTED BY NIGHTCAPS CLUB
Two competitions were held by the Nightcaps Golf Club. The best cards were:— Flag match.—R. Malcolm, on the 19th green; W. McElligott, on the 19th fairway; E. Thomson, in the 17th hole. R. Malcolm reduced his handicap by two.
Medal match.—W. Robertson, 81-10-71; W. McElligott, 78-5-73; E. Thomson, 79-6-73.
