Mr D. W. Stalker has been appointed deputy to the chairman of the Southland Armed Forces Appeal Board, Mr E. H. Murney, in place of the late Mr Gordon J. Reed. Because of illness Mr Stalker was unable to attend the sittings of the board in Invercargill last week and Mr D. H. Cockbum acted as chairman. Mr Stalker has been a member of the board since it was established.
Mr D. J. Wesney, who will represent the Automobile Association (Southland) at the half-yearly, conference of the South Island Motor Union which will be held at Christchurch on Friday, will leave Invercargill on Thursday. The Rev. Hugh Graham was reelected president of the Invercargill branch of the W.E.A. at the annual meeting of the branch last night. Mr D. Harris will leave Invercargill this morning for Wellington, where he will attend a sitting of the Conciliation Council. The council will deal with the New Zealand county councils’ employees’ (rural section) award and Mr Harris, representing the Southland General Labourers’ Union, will act as an assessor at the sitting. He will return to Invercargill on Saturday. x Mr H. O. Barker, postmaster at Winton, resumed duty after his annual leave yesterday. Guests at the Grand Hotel include Major H. M. Lees (U.S.A.), Messrs J. E. Lynn, L. J. Lynn (Auckland), W. Smith, Miss T. Corbett " (Wellington), Mr R. J. Moore (Christchurch), Captain and Mrs D. Hastings (Bumham), Messrs A. de Beer, J. L. Williams (Dunedin) and Miss N. Bragg (Stewart Island).
