BOWLS TOURNAMENT AT WAIKIWI

Te Rangi Rink Win

The last bowls tournament of the 1944-45 season in Southland was played in the rain at Waikiwi on Saturday. Although conditions were anything but pleasant a decision was made to carry on. The wet surface prevented high-class bowls being played, but there were many good heads and several close finishes. A rink from the Te Rang! club were the only team to go through section play without defeat; they won four games and were declared winners of the tournament. The rink consisted of R. Kerr, G. J. Hope, G. Donald, and S. Johnstone (s). The winning rink have played consistently well in one-day tournaments this season. They were runers-up at both the Georgetown and Southland tournaments. Johnstone and Hope were members of the Te Rangi rink which won the Easter rinks event. Five rinks played off for second prize, and W. O’Brien’s R.S.A. rink beat E. Watson’s Waikiwi rink in the final game. PATRIOTIC TOURNAMENT The Waikiwi club has decided to conduct a patriotic mixed rinks tournament next Saturday. Entries close at noon on Thursday.
