LANCE WING’S FAILURE GREAT FINISH BY PALFREY (Special) CHRISTCHURCH, April 8. Typhoon was a course scratching for the Great Autumn Handicap. First In was sent out a strong favourite and she justified the confidence of her admirers with an impressive performance, even though Palfrey ran her to a neck at the post. . x Bridge Acre and Lord Nuffield set out to make the pace from the start, and at the mile post they were clear of Lowry Bay with Sister Sal, Hormuz, First In, Lance Wing and Immediate in the next bunch. Signal Officer and Vafort brought up the rear. First In made a dash for six furlongs, following Bridge Acre and Lord Nuffield round the turn to the straight, where Lowry Bay, Sister Sal and Immediate were still going well. Palfrey and Signal Officer were making up ground. Once In line for home, Bridge Acre and Lord Nuffield soon retired, leaving First In to take the lead. She was two lengths in front at the distance, where Immediate, Palfrey, Lowry Bay, Sister Sal and Signal Officer were next. Palfrey staged a great finishing run and gradually overhauled First In, who held on to win by a neck. Lowry Bay did the best of the others, coming on again to beat Immediate by a head. Foxleap put in a strong run in the straight to finish close up just in front of Signal Officer, after whom came Foxhaven and Sister Sal. The others were strung out, Gamble being last. Lance Wing, handy enough a mile from home, drifted back gradually and had only Bridge Acre and Gamble behind him at the post. Lance Wing’s poor showing was a shock to his numerous admirers. PENSACOLA’S EASY WIN

The Templeton Handicap drew a field of 13 sprinters, but Pensacola, who was a pronounced favourite, had an easy win. He trailed Nurnie and Whitley in the first part, then drew away to win as he liked from Donegal Bay with Sing Sing and Foxcatcher well beaten. This order was unchanged over the last two furlongs. Lord Advocate suffered serious interference before the field had travelled far.

Beau Cheval was responsible for a smooth performance in the Challenge Stakes. John Gay led him to the straight, but Beau Cheval had his measure a furlong from the post and won easily. Golden Souvenir came on to beat the tiring John Gay for second. Gigli showed early speed, but tired and was beaten for fourth place by Al-Sirat, who, with Confusion, lost several lengths at the start. ' Roman Son and Rockery had a duel over the last half-mile of the Peerswick Hurdles, the former winning by a head. Prince Dolomite was third, but had no chance of catching the other pair. Spanish Main was fourth and Paladeo a long way back after leading for six furlongs. Chiding fell at the mile post and Test Pilot at the five furlongs. Delinquent headed Liquidate after three furlongs in the Yaldhurst Handicap, Slipstream, Tagore and Rahiri following to the straight. Rahiri took charge a little further on and won as he liked. Cooraclare came with a late run to beat Tagore with Liquidate close up. SUCCESS OF TUIS Tuis followed Desert Strife to the straight in the Gimcrack Handicap and then went into the lead, apparently with the race won. Falconbridge, after being slow away, still had a long gap to bridge in the straight, but he put in a brilliant run. He caught Tuis near the post, but the favourite responded to pressure, winning by a head. There was a gap to Lex, who beat Desert Strife near the post, then came Hamish and Centime at intervals. Lexia was near the front all the way in the Autumn Nursery, but Derene, always handy, finished a little too well and beat her In the last two strides. Fearless came home with a good run to get third, with Bruce, Nightstalk and Iron Duke close up. Essay dropped out a long way from home, and the favourite, Pallssy, was never sighted. After Lord Brolefort and Trueway had led Olga’s Choice and Lord Darnley to the straight in the Addington Handicap, Authentic took charge at the distance from The Vulture. They had a hard tussle to the post, Authentic winning by a head. Honest Sal staged a great run on the outside and was only a head away third. Lalla Meer and Silver Sal headed the others. An inquiry showed that Authentic interfered with The Vulture in the straight, but the judicial committee held that it did not affect the result. K. Nuttall, the rider of Authentic, was cautioned.
