FIVE SONS WITH FORCES
RECORD OF WYNDHAM FAMILY An excellent family record of war service was disclosed in a case heard by the Southland Armed Forces Appeal Board at its sitting in Invercargill yesterday. It was stated that of the six sons of Mrs McKay and the late Mr W. C. C. McKay, of Wyndham, five were serving with the forces, Gordon McKay in Italy, Samuel McKay with the Navy, George McKay in India, Osborne McKay in England and Archibald McKay with the Air Force in New Zealand. The appeal was on behalf of the remaining son, Robert M. McKay, who, it was stated, was required to conduct a large general store which had been run by the family for 30 or 40 years. The chairman of the board, Mr D. H. Cockburn: The war record of this family is undoubtedly very creditable. To the reservist, he said: I take it that apart from the business your attitude to this enpeal would be very different? —Yes. The board adjourned the appeal sine die. ANOTHER GOOD RECORD Another fine war record is that of the family of Mr I. F. Martyn, of Seaward Downs. Mr Martyn is a returned soldier of the last war and in giving evidence as an appellant at the sitting of the board yesterday he said he had three sons overseas. His appeal was on behalf of his fourth son, V. R. Martyn, a student at the Teachers’ Training College, Dunedin. He asked that the calling up of this son should be delayed until the middle of next December to enable him to complete his course at the college. Mr Martyn said he had a fifth son who was not yet of military age. His appeal was granted.
