PACE WORK AT RICCARTON
TRAINERS PREPARE TO TRAVEL (Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 18. With Riccarton trainers going on tour with their teams for the holiday racing, their convenience ' has been studied, with a grass track available each morning this week. The conditions were pleasant this morning, but, though most of the horses were out, pace work was the general order. Lucky Jack and Roman Son, who have hurdle engagements at Wingatui, were mates in an attractive school over four hurdles, with Lucky Jack claiming a slight advantage over the final flight. He may go to Waikouaiti between the two Wingatui days, but Roman Son is likely to travel on to Wyndham and Invercargill. C. G. Humphries sent his pair, Great March and The Vulture, over four hurdles, which they jumped in good style. These two will go to Wingatui, where Great March will take on the hurdle races. The Vulture is similarly engaged, but he is also in flat races. PLANS FOR TEST PILOT Test Pilot had a mate in Cobalt for a round of the steeplechase fences, which they jumped attractively. Test Pilot will be restricted to road work during the holidays and then will be prepared for a trip to Riverton at Easter. Cobalt joined R. Register’s stable recently and he is a promising novice. Several Riccarton trainers went north tonight, taking horses which are to race at North Island holiday meetings. F. A. Roberts took John Gay, Irish Note, Arustra, Quick March and Lalla Meer for the Manawatu and Wairarapa meetings, while D. Spence took Honest Sal with a similar programme in view. J. M. Olive, who travelled with Nurnie, Junior and Finalist, will go to Manawatu and Marton. All of these horses look well, but Junior has not had any racing this season.
