Mrs W. E. Bews, Lewis street, has returned from a visit to Dunedin.
Mrs J. L. Hazlett, Albert street, is spending a holiday at the Rocks.
Miss Winifred Sinclair, Dunedin, arrives on Thursday to visit Mrs E. Sinclair, Morton street.
Miss Margaret Henderson, Dunedin, is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs R. N. Henderson, Browns.
Miss M. Wilson, South Hillend, has returned from Isla Bank, where she was the guest of Miss V. Officer. Mrs R. C. Abernethy, Avenal Flats, leaves tomorrow for a holiday at Christchurch and Diamond Harbour. Mrs R. E. Stevens, Dunedin, arrives on Thursday to visit her parents, Mr and Mrs L. A. Lee, Princes street.
Miss May Mahoney, Wellington, arrives today to spend a holiday with her sister, Mrs E. C. Scully, Ythan street. On Friday evening, schoolchildren collectors for the Dr Barnado Homes were shown a series of films by the secretary, Mr A. L. Anderson. The organic r was Mrs J. D. Campbell. On Friday afternoon members of the staff of the Waihopai school met to present gifts to Miss W. Titchener, on the occasion of her approaching marriage, and to Miss B. G. Lister, who has resigned in order to take a position at Wanaka.
A further party of war brides arrived at Auckland from overseas last week. They are the wives of members of all three services who have married while abroad, and are proceeding to homes scattered throughout the Dominion, The names of the members of the party are: Mesdames D. R. Bailey, J- L. Barlow, S. H. Barrett, R. Broadbent, L. H. Butler, G. A. Davis, J. M. Dermody, J. Douglas, M. E. G. Finlayson, C. M. Harvey, H. G. Higgins, G. H. Horwood, H. R. Ruffell, A. W. Smith and Marsh.
A pleasant afternoon was spent at the home of Miss Stevens, Teviot street, where about 20 members of the South branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union met to pay tribute to the work of Miss Griffiths, Mrs A. G. Lea and Mrs Reidy over a long period of years. Each was presented with a bouquet, and a fashioned coloured glass water jug. The afternoon was spent in community singing, and a solo was contributed by Mrs Hunter. The evangelical part was conducted by Mrs Richards, who commented on the 23rd Psalm. Each recipient suitably responded After the evening service on Sunday, a social was given at the Presbyterian Sunday School Hall, at Winton, to new members of the church, and also to welcome home returned servicemen. The Rev. H. Haigh and Mr J. A. Wilson, on behalf of the minister, session, and congregation, gave a cordial welcome, and expressed pleasure and gratitude to the loyal services given by the men while on military duties. During the evening, Mr and Mrs D. Wildey, who are leaving for Timaru, were presented with a gift from the members of session by Mr Haigh, who wished them happiness and good health. Mrs J. B. Wilson, on behalf of the P.W.M.U. and Young Women’s Guild, in making a presentation to Mrs Wildey, thanked her for her long and faithful service, and wished her happiness in her new home.
