POPULAR POLICE OFFICER
DETECTIVE-SERGEANT HILL ENTERTAINED Tributes to his popularity as a police officer were paid to Detective-Sergeant J. W. Hill at a social function in his honour in Invercargill last night. De-tective-Sergeant Hill has been transferred to Oamaru, where he will take charge of the station. He has been stationed in Invercargill for the last 184 years. Sergeant C. D. King, chairman of the Invercargill Police Social Committee, presided over a representative attendance of business men, members of the police force, the Law Society, Supreme Court staff, the Transport Department and the Child Welfare Department. Among the visitors were the Mayor of Invercargill (Mr Abraham Wachner), the Mayor of South Invercargill (Mr Owen Smith), the Inspector of Police (Mr J. B. Young) and Flight Sergeant McLennan (Wellington). Congratulations- upon Detective-Ser-geant Hill's promotion were extended by the chairman and several other speakers and good wishes were expressed for his future prosperity. On behalf of the police force Inspector Young handed him a luncheon set as a mark of the esteem in which he was held by the force. Detective-Sergeant Hill thanked the members of the force for their good wishes and gift, and said that he would carry away pleasant recollections of his stay in Southland. The warmth of the people and the co-operation of the public and the law departments would not soon be forgotten by him. Opportunity was taken by the Mayor of Invercargill to welcome Inspector Young to Invercargill. A musical programme was contributed by Messrs C. Hawes, A. Wills, P, Binns, G. Miller, D. Maxted, W. L. Joyce, 0. Smith and the police band. Detective-Sergeant Hill will leave for Oamaru on Thursday morning.
