SURFER COLLAPSES AND DIES

Youth Taking Part In Event At Lyall Bay (P.A.) WELLINGTON, December 17. Tragic consequences attended a gala day at Lyall Bay beach this afternoon, when a youth taking part in a surfing event collapsed and died. He was Thomas Michael Redican, aged 17, of 60 Derwent street. Redican, who was beltman for the Island Bay Junior Surf Club’s team, was about 50 yards out from the shore when he was seen suddenly to collapse and disappear. Within a few minutes the surfers had recovered the body and brought him ashore. Resuscitation was applied and a doctor was called, but all efforts at restoration were unsuccessful. FOUND DEAD IN BATH An elderly man, Walter Buchanan, living at 208 Main street north, Gore, was found dead in his bath about midday on Saturday by Mr John Ray, a land agent of Gore. Mr Buchanan, who was retired and was 65 years of age, had been living by himself. He had not been seen for several days, and death appeared to have occurred some hours previously. An inquest was opened and adjourned on Saturday night, evidence of identification being given by a son, John Buchanan,
