RUGBY FOOTBALL

NEW ZEALAND TEAM’S SUCCESS (Official Correspondent, N.Z.E.F.) ROME, December 15. Fast and scintillating Rugby thrilled several thousand spectators at an advanced depot on the Adriatic coast when a headquarters team of the 2nd N.Z.E.F. beat a strong Allied services side by 12 points to 8. The Allied team included players from South Africa, England, Scotland, Wales, Australia and Canada, whereas the New Zealand team was selected from a few small units. The New Zealand points came from a try by J. S. Robertson, Christchurch, and penalty goals by W. Tarplett, Auckland (2), R. D. Hooper, Hawke’s Bay (1). The Allied points were from a try by R. Humphries, Wales, and a try and conversion by H. L. Brunow, South Africa. New Zealand owed its success to the overwhelming play of the forwards and the fine defence against the brilliance of Brunow, who is a Springbok flyhalf, and the elusiveness of L. Babrow, the 1937 Springbok. Their play kept the New Zealand backs and the spectators on their toes throughout. GOOD MATCH PLAYED AT MAADI (Official Correspondent, N.Z.E.F.) ) CAIRO, December 15. In the best game in the Maadi camp season so far, Discharge Depot beat Base by 14 points to 11. For Discharge Depot Hakaraia (1) and Hegglun (2) scored tries; Welch converted one and also kicked a penalty goal. For Base, Perriam scored a try and kicked a penalty goal; Taylor, who is a former All Black, scored a brilliant try and converted it. REPRESENTATIVE SEASON IN EGYPT (Official Correspondent, N.Z.E.F.) CAIRO, December 15. Maadi Camp began the representative season by losing the game against Royal Artillery but it was only in the last minute that the British team won with a converted try. Perriam, who with Tindill made many good breaks, kicked a penalty goal early, but the New Zealand backs lacked the ball as a result of the superior hooking of the English side.
