WATERSIDE WORKERS
Appeals For Grade I Men Withdrawn (P.A.) WELLINGTON, December 16. Appeals on behalf of 23 Grade I men entered by the Waterfront Control Commission were withdrawn before the Armed Forces Appeal Board at the Commission’s request. The commission stated: (1) There had been a reduction in the volume of shipping at Wellington and it was unlikely to increase to any extent next year. (2) The men concerned were skilled waterside workers, but it could not be maintained that there were not sufficient physically fit men available for replacement in the industry. (3) In view of the Government’s policy to return to industry men with more than three years’ overseas service there would no doubt be an equivalent number of men returned to the Wellington waterfront.
