SENIOR CRICKET GAMES

BOWLERS HOLD UPPER HAND

The competitions of the Southland Cricket Association were continued on Saturday in fine, but dull weather. In the senior games the bowlers again had the upper hand and scoring generally was low. There were two exciting finishes. Union failed narrowly in a determined effort to gain a four-point win against Invercargill, and Old Boys scored a two-point win over Appleby by only two runs. Marist had a fairly comfortable two-point win against Bluff. INVERCARGILL’S POOR SHOWING Invercargill collapsed in their first innings against Union, being all out for 41. Union used only two bowlers, G. Marshall and N. O’Grady, who divided the wickets equally. Union made 121 for four wickets and then declared their innings closed. Top score, and incidentally the highest score in the senior competition for the day, was made by A. Storrie, who scored 58 not out. C. Shirley and V. Poole made 20 each. T. McKenzie with four wickets for 58 runs was the most successful bowler for Invercargill. Invercargill had a first innings deficiency of 80 runs and Union went all out for a four-point win. However, thanks to a stand by I. Hall (27) and B. Overton (26 not out), who put on 42 for the sixth wicket, Invercargill did better in their second innings and at stumps had scored 81 for eight wickets. Union thus had to be content with a two-point win by 80 runs on the first innings. In Invercargill’s second innings Marshall took three wickets for 23 runs, making his total for the match eight wickets for 37 runs. Scores:—

Marist made a really good start in their first innings against Bluff. When the second wicket fell there were 113 runs on the board, but the remaining wickets went cheaply and the innings closed for 142. N. Forde, W. Sanders and M. Rattray added 120 runs between them, Sanders with 48 being top-scorer of the trio. Of the other batsmen N. McGowan, who was run out, alone reached double figures. Anderson, five for 34', and Mclvor, four for 35, took the wickets for Bluff. .

Marist’s total proved too much for Bluff, who were all out for 111, leaving Marist the. winners by 31 runs on the first innings. Parry (28) and J. Brodie (23) saved Bluff, from what at one stage looked like being a bad collapse. Easily the most successful bowler for Marist was N. McGowan, who took six wickets for 31 runs in 6.4 overs. Scores:—

Scandrett came to the rescue of Old Boys and saved their score from being unusually small. He made 33 out of the total of 79. A. Pickard (14) and S. G. Richardson (11) were the only other double figure scorers. D. Morrison did an outstanding spell of bowling for Appleby, taking five wickets for six runs. Of his eight overs, five were maidens.

The total of 79 proved just too much for Appleby and they were all out for 77, giving Old Boys a win by two runs on the first innings. Appleby, like Old Boys, leaned heavily on one batsman, C. Shirley scoring 43 out of the total of 77. W. Timms made 13, but none of the other batsmen got a double figure. It was A. Pickard’s bowling that caused the damage. He took eight wickets for 19 runs in 10 overs, three of which were

maidens. Five of the batsmen he dismissed failed to score. Scores:—
