GOOD SOUTHLAND PERFORMANCES
Secondary School Sports
(Special) DUNEDIN, November 5. Twelve records were broken or equalled at the 18th annual intersecondary schools sports held on the Carisbrook ground, Dunedin, yesterday.' Many outstanding'performances were registered. , Two Invercargill schools were represented, the Southland Boys’ High School and the Marist Brothers’ High School. The Southland Boys’ High School team was successful in winning the Macassey Shield for the senior competition and a new trophy, given by Mr C. W. Clark, president of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. This takes the form of a baton for the winner of the relay. In the junior competition the Southland Boys’ High School were runners-up to King’s High School. Marist were not successful in winning any competitions, but they registered some good performances for a small school.
The outstanding athlete in the senior division was T. B. Richardson, of the Southland Boys’ High School. He won three events and was responsible for Southland’s relay victory. He won the 440 yards in 53 3-ssec, a record. This time was bettered by Richardson in his heat, which he ran in 53sec. He also won the 880 yards in 2min Bsec and the long jump with a jump of 20ft 6|in. The senior 440 yards final resolved itself into a race between the two Invercargill runners, Richardson and K. Curran, of Marist. Both boys ran very fine races. M. Carran, of the Boys’ High School, ran well in the intermediate 440 yards, winning his heat in 55 l-ssec, only 4-ssec outside the record. In the junior section B. Hoffman and 1. Fraser, exponents of the western roll, filled the first and second places, while Fraser was second in the long jump. M. Johnson, of Southland, ran two good races to gain second place in both the 220 yards and 440 yards. Following are the results:— SENIOR 100 Yards.— C. G. Steel (Waitaki) 1, A. N. Ingram (Otago) 2, A.
