MAIN DOUBLE TO HAWKE’S BAY GLENFALLOCH REPEATS SUCCESS (Special) WELLINGTON, October 22. Hawke’s Bay stables won the main handicap double at Trentham on Saturday when Glenfalloch repeated last year’s success in the Wellington Handicap and Royal Heir succeeded in the Shorts Handicap. Glenfalloch was the only favourite to win and Royal Heir was third choice.
Glenfalloch was ridden by W. J. Broughton, who ran no risk of his mount stopping like he did in January when the Racing Club Handicap was lost through misadventure. Glenfalloch was a fair way back in the first halfmile, but gradually improved and after making a fast run on the turn towards the straight he took charge soon after straightening up for home and had the race won with a furlong to run. Patu Po, who was always prominent in the running, finished solidly for second and Rink, who was always well placed, was beaten only in the last few strides for second, being a good third ahead of Kevin, Classform and Voltaire. ROYAL HEIR’S WIN Royal Heir was one of the leaders all the way in the Shorts Handicap, accompanying Koi Ragi in the run to the course proper, where he went on alone and, though stopping near the post, he won attractively from Salmi, who made a game effort over the last furlong and successfully held off a late run from Gulf Stream.
Amorlad maintained his form recovery to defeat the favourite, Tara King, in the Wainui Handicap. Both horses came from behind after the pacemakers had run themselves out and Amorlad always had a slight advantage of Tara King in the hard finish. He was one of the three winners from the South Island, the others being Albino and Kiloney, the last named at odds above £25.
CAULFIELD CUP WON BY COUNSEL Paralysing Run In Last Stretch (Rec. 7 p.m.) MELBOURNE, October 22. Coming with a paralysing run in the last half furlong Counsel on Saturday won the 1944 Caulfield Cup by a narrow margin from the topweight Lawrence. The first and second place fillers shared equal favouritism. Lawrence went ahead in the straight, but Counsel’s final burst took him to the front, and although Lawrence was coming again at the finish he could not get up. Huntingdale, a long-priced outsider, was a close third. Details:— CAULFIELD CUP, £6500 and War Bonds valued £l5O. One mile and a-haIf—COUN-SEL 8.12 (Breasley) 1, LAWRENCE 9.3 (Williamson) 2, HUNTINGDALE 7.4 (Cowper) 3. Twenty-eight started. A neck; half a length. Time. 2.29’/a. NIGHTBEAM’S WIN IN METROPOLITAN (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, October 22. Heavily backed from long odds the aged Night Raid gelding Nightbeam made an overpowering run in the last stages of the race to defeat the brilliant mare Flight in the Metropolitan Handicap at Randwick on Saturday. Last year’s Epsom Handicap winner Kiaree was third.
