OPENING OF FISHING SEASON

Unfavourable Conditions The heavy rain on Saturday night and the high wind yesterday made conditions unfavourable for the opening of the fishing season. There were a good many anglers out yesterday, but no record bags were reported and quite a number did not catch a single fish. The high wind was mainly responsible for this. There were plenty of fish about and most of those that were caught were in first-class condition. The prospects for a good season are promising. One of the best bags of the day for anglers with fly or minnow was one of •six fish caught by Mr Walter Tapper in the Waimatuku. Mr J. Vallantyne caught five in the Otapiri, Mr G. Friend five in the Makarewa and Mr G. Wilson four in the Makarewa.
