RESCUE OF ELDERLY MAN

Small Dwelling Burned (P.A.) WANGANUI, October 1. Rescued from a burning house in Silverhope road about a mile from Hunterville early this morning, John Hill, aged 87, was subsequently admitted to the Wanganui Hospital with burns about the hands and feet. His condition is reported to be fairly comfortable. Mr Hill, who is a bachelor, has- lived alone in a small dwelling for more than half a century, but is deaf. When his home caught alight shortly after midnight he did not hear the noise of the flames. The rescue was carried out by Mr John Healey, an employee of a saw mill opposite. He saw flames coming from the house and in spite of the fire having a good hold he entered the building and carried Mr Hill to safety.
