FINAL DAYS OF VICTORY LOAN

Southland Requires £329,040

CITY HAS 80 PER CENT. OF OBJECTIVE

Southland still requires £329,040 to achieve its objective of £1,531,000 in the Victory loan which closes on Wednesday. Yesterday there were 72 applications for £14,895 worth of stock, £10,664 was invested in national savings and Victory bond sales realized £4902. This gave a total of £30,461 and raised the total for Southland to date to £1,201,960..

Invercargill now has £714,947, or 80 per cent, of its objective of £894,500, Eastern district has £157,243 of its objective of £223,000 and Gore has £95,878 of its objective of £156,500. Makarewa Junction with £3455 in hand is .within £45 of its objective of £3500.

An extra effort is to be made to give Southland its objective of £1,531,000 by Tuesday. With this end in view the district organizer, Mr W. G. Nield, will make a special appeal for support for the loan during the Victory Parade broadcast beginning at 7 p.m. on Monday. LANDSLIDE DESIRED “I hope that a landslide of both large and small investors will take place now that there is a real possibility of achieving Southland’s objective,” Mr Nield said yesterday. “I have been quite confident from the start that Southland would not fail and this optimism has been justified by the effort that the people of Southland have made in the past few days.” There was a steady stream of people anxious to support the loan, by investment, by deposits in national savings accounts or by the purchase of Victory bonds, at the Post Office Savings Bank yesterday. The majority of the investments were for small amounts, thus once again demonstrating that good support for the loan is forthcoming from people of small or moderate means. In addition, a table was placed in the vestibule of the chief post office for the sale of bonds. In front of the table there was a mat with a caricature of Hitler, drawings of the swastika and drawings of the Rising Sun with a caricature of a Japanese face in the centre of the sun. Thus people, while purchasing, bonds, were able to crush Hitler and the emblems of Nazism and Japanese Imperialism beneath their feet. This symbolic act appealed strongly to many people and good business was done during the day, 'about £5OO worth of bonds being sold. The table will again be in the vestibule for the sale of bonds this morning. MOTHERS OF SOLDIERS An elderly woman, who has five sons in the forces (one was killed recently), called on Mr Nield yesterday and invested £5 in the loan. She suggested that as a special effort mothers of soldiers should invest £1 each in the loan. A boy living at Ryal Bush, who over a period earned £5O by rabbiting and by the harvesting of cocksfoot seed, has invested the whole of that amount in the loan. Tuatapere, which in the last loan campaign, was the first place in New Zealand to reach a five figure target, has been rather backward on this occasion. So far Tuatapere has raised only £17,000 of its objective of £28,000 and the local loan committee intends to make a special effort to achieve the objective before Wednesday. Tonight at 7 p.m. there will be another “Call to the Nation” broadcast when the chairman of the 20 district loan committees throughout the Dominion will report on the progress of the loan campaign in their districts. The first report will be from Southland as the district leading for the First Honour banner. The Mayor, Mr A. Wachn'er, will report On behalf of Southland. Otautau is holding a Victory loan wheelbarrow race at 7.30 p.m. today. The event is reported to have aroused a great deal of local interest. • The following table shows the objectives for the various Southland districts together with the investments received up to yester-
