Mr Eustace Russell was elected a life member of the Southland Anglers’ Club at a meeting of the club last night. The president (Mr G. Friend) referred to the splendid work Mr Russell had done in the interests of the club. Mr M. J. Forde, Dominion president of the New Zealand Railway Officers’ Institute, arrived in Invercargill yesterday. Tonight he will address a meeting of the Southland branch of the institute.
Mr Arthur G. Cockroft, who recently retired from the position of railway district traffic manager at Wellington and who fomerly was well known in Southland rowing circles, is visiting Invercargil. The Board of Governors of John McGlashan College has appointed Lieuten-ant-Colonel J. R. J. Conolly, D. 5.0., to the position of headmaster of the college in succession to Mr R. G. C. McNab, who resigned on receiving a British Government appointment in the Middle East. Lieutenant-Colonel Conolly, whose home is in the Paeroa district, spent some years before the war as a teacher in State schools in the Auckland province, one appointment being at the Ngatea District High School. He has a particularly fine record in the teaching profession. He returned to the Dominion on furlough last April.— (P.A.).
The superintendent of the Invercargill Fire Brigade, Mr J. Philp, will leave for Wellington by the express this morning.
Mr J. E. .Strachan, rector of the Rangiora High School, is expected to arrive at Gore tonight. On Tuesday night he will address a meeting convened by the Gore High School Board of Governors and the Gore branch of the Farmers’ Union on the proposed establishment of an agricultural college in Southland. Mr Strachan was formerly a member of the teaching staff of the Gore High School.
Officer Cadet lan Taylor, who is attending the Royal Military College, England, has received his commission, according to advice received by his mother, Mrs R. Taylor, of Riverton.
Reference to the death during the season of Mr H. A. Lyons, a life member of the club, was made by the president (Mr G. Friend) at the annual meeting of the Southland Anglers’ Club last night. Members stood in silence for a few moments as a mark of respect. Well known throughout New Zealand as a cricket enthusiast, Mr W. R. Fee, chairman of the Auckland Cricket Association’s Management Committee for the last 10 years, has announced his retirement from that position because of health reasons. The committee has decided to place on record its appreciation of Mr Fee’s “magnificent work.”— (P.A.).
Mr M. N. Metzger received a presentation from the Winton Air Training Corps before his marriage. Flight Sergeant Kilkerr and Sergeant W. Gerrard conveyed best wishes on behalf of the cadets and thanked him for his services to the unit. Mr Metzger replied. A motion of sympathy with Cr F. F. Trapski in the death of his brother, Mr J. Trapski, was carried at a meeting of the Southland County Council yesterday. Guests at the Grand include Mr and Mrs F. B. McKeague (Masterton), Mr and Mrs M. J. Forde and Mrs J. Sillars (Wellington).
