Gordon, who has been killed in action, was well known in sporting circles in Southland. He was a member of the Invercargill Amateur Athletic Club. In 1938 when he represented the club at the Otago athletic championships he won the half-mile and in the same year he was second in the New Zealand championships at Christchurch. He played Rugby football for the Invercargill Club. He also took an active interest in the Boys’ Brigade of the First Church. 2nd Lieutenant Gordon was the only son of Mr and Mrs J. Gordon, 155 Spey street. Born at Outram 22 years ago, he was educated at the Middle school and the Southland Boys’ . High School. On leaving school he joined the clerical staff of the district railway engineer’s office. He enlisted at the age of 18 and gained his commission in the field. He was previously reported wounded. Pte O. E. Wilson, who has been killed in action, was the only son of Mr and Mrs R. T. Wilson, formerly of Balfour. Bom at Gore in 1913, he received his education at the Pine Bush and Balfour schools and the Gore High School. Later he joined the staff of his uncle, Mr E. W. White, solicitor, of Christchurch, and gained the degree of LL.B. just before the outbreak of war. Before he went overseas about the end of last year he was a member of the Territorial Force. He is survived by his wife, Mrs May Wilson, of Christchurch.

Dvr A. D. Shaw, who has been reported wounded, was the only son of the late Mr and Mrs Shaw, Henley. He was educated at the Henley school. Before entering camp he worked on various farms at Balfour. He went overseas in July 1943. Dvr Shaw is 21. T/L/Cpl D. M. Gilmour, whose name appeared in a casualty list on Wednesday, is not seriously wounded and is progressing satisfactorily, according to advice received by his wife. He was previously wounded at Cassino in March. NAVAL CASUALTIES (P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 4. The following naval casualties were reported today. All are R.N.Z.N.V.R.:— LIFE LOST ON ACTIVE SERVICE Gordon, T/Sub-Lieut J. W., Christchurch. DIED OF ILLNESS Geddes, T/ Acting Lieut M., Tarata. MISSING Foley, T/Sub-Lieut A. 8., Takapau.
