Mr Gandhi’s Release

LONDON, May 7.

The whole Indian Press, Nationalist and British-owned, warmly welcomes the release of Mr Gandhi, says the Bombay correspondent of The Times. There is a nation-wide feeling that the credit for his release is due to the Viceroy, Lord Wavell, whose prestige, already high, has been further increased. Hindu and Moslem commentators find the Government’s compassion politically significant. It is agreed that in the event of Mr Gandhi’s recovery there are promising possibilities on the ground that he knows when to change his tactics.
