Expelled from their El Alamein defence zone, the Axis forces are in full retreat along the coast road to the west. It is suggested that FieldMarshal Rommel may attempt to make a stand at Mersa Matruh, but if this fails he will have no alternative but to fall back over the Libyan frontier. The Axis columns are being constantly harried from the air and they are also in danger of being bombarded from the sea.
