STRUGGLE IN FRANCE
Laval And Fascist Leaders LONDON, September 30 A new struggle for power has developed in France, according to an observer with reliable contacts in Vichy and Paris. The principals in the struggle are the Vice-Prime Minister, Pierre Laval, who is supported by the German Foreign Minister, Herr Joachim von Ribbentrop and the German Foreign Office, and the French fascist leaders, Jacques Doriot and Benoist Mechin, who are supported by the German Army and the Gestapo. Benoist Mechin was recently dismissed from his post as Secretary of State because of his intrigues with Doriot. The observer states that the doddering Marshal Petain is becoming more and more a background figure despite the efforts of his publicity experts. The Nazi Foreign Office clique supporting Laval regard him as their best weapon for the total enslavement of France. The German Army leaders who are backing Doriot want France to break with the United States and to take an active part in the war.
