OBITUARY
MR J. R. TOWNSEND
The death of a former well-known resident of Gore, Mr John Ramsay Townsend, occurred last week at Waikouaiti. Mr Townsend had lived in the Gore district for a number of years before his retirement about a year ago to his native town. Bom at Waikouaiti 73 years ago, Mr Townsend was a son of the late Mr and Mrs J. A. Townsend. He received his education at the Waikouaiti school. Later he joined a survey party and he worked with this party In the North Island for about three years. After the outbreak of the Boer War he enlisted with the Otago Hussars and on his return to New Zealand he took up farming in the Waikouaiti district. During the Great War Mr Townsend removed to Gore to take over the “LambhiU” property of 1100 acres at East Gore. This he worked successfully until about a year ago, when m-health forced him to retire. In his youth Mr Townsend took a keen interest in sport, particularly football and cricket. He was also a rifle shot and horseman. He was a member of the Gore Bowling Club for a period and he was also a member of the Returned Services Association. He married Miss Maria Buddy, of Waikouaiti, by whom he is survived. Mr F. J. Townsend, of Gore, is a nephew. MR J. A. McKESIZIE A well-known resident of Waimahaka, Mr John Alexander McKenzie, died recently. Bom at Fortrose in 1880, he was the youngest son of the late Mr and Mrs Kenneth McKenzie, of Green Bush, and received ills education at the Fortrose school. He worked on his father’s farm until 1905, when he married Miss Catherine Crosbie, of Waikawa Valley, and took up a farm at Otara. He went in for dairying and grazing on a large scale, and continued this type of farming at Pine Bush, where he lived for 11 years. In both districts he took a leading part in local activities, being a director of theOtara and Pine Bush dairy factories, a member of the Pine Bush School Committee and president of the Pine Bush Racing Club. In his earlier years he was a member of the Murihiku Mounted Rifles, in which body he held the rank of sergeant. For the last ten years of his life he lived in retirement in Waimahaka. Mr McKenzie is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
