G. (“Gillie") Wilson. Mr Wilson' was a Victorian who figured prominently in senior and State cricket in Australia before he came to New Zealand in 1902. He was a stylish and forceful batsman and represented Victoria in State matches. Although he did not represent Australia he was considered well in the running for that honour when he was transferred to New Zealand. It was little wonder then that his services both as administrator and player were sought by Southland cricket enthusiasts. Invercargill was favoured by his transfer to the southernmost branch of Sargood, Son and Ewen, as not only in cricket but in other sports were his services and advice freely given. He was a live wire in the development and progress of the game of cricket in the south, and not long after he left Invercargill and associated himself with cricket in other parts of New ‘Zealand, he earned the popular cognomen of "Father.” He truly was the father of New Zealand cricket 20 to 30 years ago. GAME FLOURISHED “Gillie” Wilson remained in Invercargill only four or five years, but in that time he worked wonders for cricket in Southland. His ability to coach and his guidance on the management committee of the Southland Cricket Association were virtues associated with progress, and in that period the game flourished as -it had not done before or since. He was a member of the management committee from 1902 «to 1905, and he played for Southland in 1902, 1903 and 1904. He was also captain of Southland. In one match against Otago he carried his bat through the innings for 117 not out. Contemporaries of his day were also well known figures in the cricket world. They included Arthur Poole, Jack Doig. Charlie Kane and C. B. Tapley (all still going strong), Frank Glasgow, G. G. Bums, Jim McNeece, Don Hamilton, F. Twemlow, M. J. Kean, R. Bennett, J. Huntley, Tom Crockett, Gus Hammond, J. O'Halloran, F. Keenan, Fred Liggins and others. Mr Wilson went to Dunedin and for several years was one of Otago’s finest batsmen. He scored three centuries for Otago--137 against Auckland in 1906, 144 against Canterbury in 1908, and 188 against Auckland in 1908. He was president of the Otago Cricket Association. In 1912 he was transferred to Wellington and he has remained there ever since. He represented the South Island and was invited to play for New Zealand, but was unable to accept the invitation.

He holds a record which must be unique among holders of life-membership of various sports institutions. He is a life-mem-ber of the St. Kilda (Melbourne) cricket and football clubs,’ the Victorian football association, and the Southland and Wellington cricket associations. All Southland sportsmen will join in congratulating him on passing another milestone in an eventful career.
