BASKETBALL

KING’S BIRTHDAY TOURNAMENT Twenty-seven teams from town and country took part in the annual King’s Birthday basketball tournament played at t(ie Duke street courts yesterday. The tournament was most successful, and whether success came their way or not the players thoroughly enjoyed the games. Although the entry was lower than it was last year, when 52 teams took part, it can be considered most satisfactory under present conditions. The morning was cold and players found the court slippery after a heavy frost, but the afternoon was fine and warm and conditions were ideal. The only country teams entered other than those playing in the weekly competitions were Riverton and Winton District High School. RATA’S SUCCESS

Rata won the first grade competition with seven points and Makarewa was runner-up with six. It was unfortunate that the Kew Nurses team was unable to take part as this team has had considerable success this season.

The younger S.G.H.S. team had a good win over Collegiate in this grade and the match between Rata and Collegiate was a close and interesting one. In the first half Collegiate missed several good shots at goal, but rallied in the second half and drew level with Rata to draw, 8-8. The second and third grades had to be played in sections. Collegiate and Bluff, playing in separate sections, secured eight points each. In the final, after a keen game, Collegiate won by 13 to 4. Roslyn Bush, continuing a series of successes this season, won the third grade with 10 points, Kennington being runner-up with six points.
