AMERICAN TANKS IN AUSTRALIA

MELBOURNE, May 30. American M 3 medium tanks known as “General Grants,” weighing 28 tons, are arriving in Australia in a steady quantity, according to The Sydney Morning Herald’s correspondent at Allied headquarters. “This week,” he says, “I visited an Australian camp and saw Australians handling these tanks. It was an encouraging sight. An Australian officer who went through the Middle East campaign assured me that these tanks are the best we have seen, probably the best we will get in this war. Nearby were American M 3 light tanks, which will be used chiefly for reconnaissance. I inspected a regiment equipped completely with tanks of American pattern.” The occasion was a review arranged by the Army Department for British, American and Australian journalists and corresnondents
