IMPROVIZED LIGHT MACHINE-GUN
(Rec. 6.30 p.m.) CANBERRA, May 31. The transformation of certain types of .303 rifles into a type of improvized light machine-gun is achieved by an attachment and certain modifications to the gun’s mechanism, which have been invented by a New Zealander, Mr W. Charlton. Announcing this, the Minister of the Army, Mr F. M. Forde, said an order for several thousand “L.M.G. Charltons,” as the invention is officially designated had been placed. The gun had been tested by Australian Army experts and had proved practicable. Trials indicated that a useful. measure of automatic fire could be obtained. The gun was not yet being made in Australia, but it was aimed to begin production as soon as possible. PRODUCTION IN N.Z. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 31. Referring to the Australian cable about the Charlton gun, the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, said yesterday that the gun was in production in New Zealand. Mr Charlton had submitted his invention to the Government, and after thorough tests it had been adopted. The Government had arranged for Mr Charlton to go to Australia.
