TEST FOR COMING GENERATIONS
ARCHBISHOP O’SHEA’S BROADCAST In a broadcast talk entitled “The War and The World Outlook” last evening, Archbishop O’Shea, Metropolitan of New Zealand, said that the further Japan extended her lines of communication the more vulnerable she would become. In the meantime, the Army, Navy and Air Force were increasing enormously, and the day would soon come when we would be in a position to deal hard blows at the enemy. An invasion of New Zealand was possible and we would have to face sacrifices, but sacrifices would do us all good. “Are we entirely guiltless?” asked Archbishop O’Shea. Britain, the Dominions and the United States were supposed to be Christian countries, but he was afraid that the people were paying only lip service to Christianity. An essential condition for a better world was that the teeming millions should have a better chance. But would there be teeming millions in the world to come? He referred to the declining population of England, and said New Zealand was following that bad example. Casualties in the war were going to hasten the process of depopulation. The family was the front line in any nation, but where were our families today? He believed we could win the war, but could we win the peace to follow? There would be a tremendous test for coming generations, which should learn from our mistakes.
