Mr J. C. Kirkland was re-elected president of the Southland Swimming Centre at the annual meeting of delegates last evening. Pilot Officer P. S. Fougere, son of Mr H. P. Fougere, Invercargill, has been promoted to the temporary rank of flying officer, according to an announcement in the latest issue of the New Zealand Gazette. The appointment of the following to the rank of lieutenant in the Home Guard has been gazetted:—John Frederick William Hamilton and John Robert Thomson (Winton), Montague O’Dowda and John Sloan and James Campbell (Stewart Island). Dr T. V. Griffiths, M.A., Mus.D., has been appointed to the Chair of Music of Canterbury University College. Dr Griffths succeeds Dr J. C. Bradshaw, who retired in April last year, the work of the music department of the college having been continued since then by Mr F. J. Page. Dr Griffiths will probably take up his appointment in about two months. Presentations to two former members of the Southland Swimming Centre, now in the armed forces, were made at the annual meeting of the centre last evening. Mr E. J. Salisbury, who was for 11 years educational officer on the centre, was handed a smoker’s companion and Mr W. T. Springford, who had been a member of the centre, was handed a pipe and case. The presentations were made by the president, Mr J. C. Kirkland, who expressed the good wishes of the members of the centre. At the meeting of the City Council last night a motion of sympathy was carried with the relations of the late Mr H. F. Drewe.
