Mrs H. H. Petrie, Earnslaw street, has returned from a holiday spent in Dunedin.
Mrs J. P. Bolam, Albert street, returned last night from a visit to Ashburton.
Mrs J. M. McCrostie, Gladstone. Terrace, has returned from a visit to Christchurch. Mrs F. W. Ellis and Miss 1 Audrey Ellis, East road, returned last night from a holiday in Timaru. Mrs C. F. A. Jones and Miss Hilary Jones, Earnslaw street, have returned from a visit to Mrs R. Stewart, Masterton.
Miss Monica Lynch, who has been spending the school holidays with her mother, Mrs D. Lynch, has left for Orepuki. A motion of sympathy with Miss B. Aspray, a member of the staff of the City Council office, in the death of her mother was carried at a meeting of the council last night. Mrs R. E. Bennetts and her small daughter, Margaret Ann, who have been the guests of Mrs T. M. Rankin, Yarrow street, returned yesterday to Dumbarton, Roxburgh. The prize-winners at the meeting of the Bridge Circle of the Women’s Club held on Monday night were Mrs T. E. Davis, and Mrs R. Brownlie. There were seven tables at play. The annual meeting of the Tuturau branch of the W.D.F.U. was held recently, when Mrs C. L. Humphries presided over a fair attendance of members. The election of officers resulted:— President, Mrs C. L. Humphries; vicepresidents, Mrs N. Marshall and Mrs R. H. Dickie; secretary, Mrs F. Mitchell; treasurer, Mrs W. Dickie; advisory members, Mrs Craig and Mrs Marshall; auditor, Mr W. A. Christie. The president thanked all officers and members for their co-operation during the past year, and appealed to them for their continued support throughout the coming year. /
APPEAL TO WOMEN OF SOUTHLAND
The Southland Provincial Patriotic Council has been asked to supply knitted comforts to the men in the Base Training Depot. It has been able to supply 234 balaclavas and 87 scarves, but has no mittens in stock. Four hundred pairs of mittens are urgently required and the council appeals to the women of Southland to knit these at once. Country knitters can get wool from their local patriotic secretaries and town people from the following women in each district: Waiklwi, Mrs Steel, North road (phone 2742); Gladstone, Mrs Wyatt, 36 Duke street (phone 127); Avenal, Mrs Scammeil, Lowe street (phone 1496); Central, Mrs G. OBITUARY
MRS ELIZABETH JORDAN (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 25. The death has occurred of Mrs Elizabeth Ann Jordan, aged 90 years, mother of the New Zealand High Commissioner, Mr W. J. Jordan, she was a daughter of Captain Joseph Catt, of Ramsgate. Her husband, Captain W. Jordan, who died in 1935, was for many years a member of the crew of the Ramsgate Life-boat and later a member of the crew of the Margate life-boat and surf-boat, which participated in many ship rescues on the dangerous Goodwin Sands. Mrs Jordon, who retained her full faculties to the end, is also survived by two daughters.
