WELCOME CLUB
Sir, —As one of the 300 women who were present at the meeting called on Monday evening to form a Welcome Club I wish to enter an emphatic protest against the procedure adopted. Apparently it was another instance common in Invercargill of pre-arranged methods to side-track file general public and ensure the direction of the new club by a body of “lime-lighters.” Monday night’s meeting cast an unmerited slur on many citizens who considered that their services could be utilized to provide much-needed entertainment for hundreds of strangers. A casual visitor could quickly discern that a recreation centre for the men in some convenient spot in the city was urgently required. The idea of a Welcome Club made instant appeal; consequently those willing to give their support were ready to help. But the action of certain people has from the start denied the general public the chance of doing its part. There is something for everyone to do these days, and the responsibilities should be shared.
WILLING TO HELP.
