SOWING OF TURNIP SEED
BONUS ON PRODUCTION A conference between turnip seed growers of the province and the Director of Primary Production (Mr R. B. Tennent) was held in Invercargill yesterday, when many points about the growing of turnip seed on contract were clarified. The president of the Southland Provincial Executive of the Farmers' Union (Mr E. A. Cameron) presided at the meeting, which was attended by Mr J. W. Woodcock, fields superintendent for Otago and Southland, and other officers of the Department of Agriculture as well as the mercantile firms handling the seed. The growers stated that they considered the price they received for the seed was too low in relation to the retail price of 4/- per lb at which it was being sold. The farmers expressed dissatisfaction with what they considered was a high retail price and asked the contracting firm to table its costs. This was done and many points were clarified during the subsequent discussion. It was stated by Mr Tennent after the meeting that a considerable bonus would be given on this year's production, thereby bringing the over-all pay■ment for turnip seed to probably 1/6 per lb. In addition, he said, it was hoped to give all growers a guarantee of a minimum of £5 an acre.
