CONTEMPT OF COURT ALLEGED

ARTICLE IN NEWSPAPER (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 4. When the Arbitration Court sat this morning to continue the hearing of an application for a general order increasing wages, Mr W. E. Anderson, advocate for the employers, asked for an adjournment till Monday when the sole witness he proposed to call would be available. The employers’ case, he said, would take about a day and a-half. It was decided to resume on Tuesday morning. Mr A. McLagan, who is appearing for the applicant (the Engine Drivers’ Union), drew the Court’s attention to a leading article in a Wellington morning paper today which, he alleged, was contempt of Court, in that it was intended to prejudice the Court and the public against the workers’ application. Mr Anderson said he could not agree that that was its purpose. It was based on remarks recently made by the Leader of the Opposition and was typical of articles that could be seen in practically any newspaper in the Dominion. He, personally, had nothing to do with the article.

The Judge said that the Court would give consideration to the matter and let the parties know later what view it took.
