TRAFFIC CONTROL IN CITY

An arrangement with the Transport Department for traffic control in Invercargill during the absence on military service of the city traffic inspectors was approved by the City Council last night. The department undertook to provide an experienced traffic controller full-time and supply him with a traffic car. For this service the council would reimburse the department at the rate of £4OO a year. The agreement might be terminated on the return of either of the traffic inspectors or by either party at one month’s notice. Cr A. W. Jones objected to the arrangement on the grounds that the council would be surrendering some of its powers. He suggested that one of the tramway traffic inspectors be appointed temporary city traffic inspector. The arrangement with the department was approved.
