PRODUCER GAS FUEL

CITY PRODUCTION BELOW REQUIREMENTS The demand in Invercargill for coal char, used as fuel in motor producer gas units, has become so great that it has become necessary to ration supplies. In a report to the City Council last night, the Trading Committee reported that it had conferred with Mr G. Cross, manager of the Linton Coal Company Ltd., and the position was that the demand for the producer fuel manufactured at the gasworks considerably exceeded the capacity of production at the gasworks. Mr Cross assured the committee that although the fuel had to be rationed all consumers were treated fairly, but it was reasonable that industrial users received first consideration. The town clerk (Mr W. F. Sturman) and the gas officers were going into the question whether any alteration could be made in the system which would enable an increased quantity of char to be produced without in any way prejudicing industrial users of coke in particular.
