FEWER BANK BRANCHES IN AUSTRALIA

(Rec. 5.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, March 3. Under the Government’s plan to rationalize industries the trading banks decided, today, to accept the Government’s proposals for closing branches in suburbs and country that could be dispensed with, so that man power, equipment, and premises could be released for more urgent war work. Mr J. J. Dedman, Minister of War Organization of Industry, said that the banks at a conference yesterday agreed to work out a common plan. Many industries had already been called on to curtail their activities drastically and the response had been most gratifying. The banks were now being asked to do no less by abandoning peace-time methods of doing business. The Government was not at present contemplating the nationalization of banking, although, from some points of view, that would be a simpler approach.
