Mr R. B. Tennent, of Wellington, Director of Primary Production, arrived in Invercargill last evening. He will attend meetings of the Primary Production Council and turnip seed growers today. The Bishop of Dunedin (the Rt. Rev. W. A. R. Fitchett) returned to Dunedin by the express yesterday afternoon after a short visit to Invercargill. Mr V. W. Boyes, who has accepted a position as field secretary for the Y.M.C.A. in the Invercargill military district, was congratulated on his appointment at yesterday’s meeting of the Invercargill Rotary Club. The president (Mr S. R. Lowden) wished Mr Boyes all success and said that he would be placed on the club’s active service list.

Cr W. Aitcheson is at present taking a cycling holiday in Central Otago. He was granted leave of absence from the meeting of the City Council last night. In a letter written on February 26 he stated he had then covered 286 miles by bicycle.

Mr H. Edginton returned from Christchurch by last night’s express. A visit by Sergeant-Pilot Irvine Maskill, of 24 George street, Invercargill, was reported by the Hounslow Rotary Club, London, in a letter dated January 1 received by the Invercargill Rotary Club at its meeting yesterday. The Hounslow Club said that SergeantPilot Maskill was very well and happy in his job.

Cabled advice has been received that Leading Aircraftman J. C. Chalmers, of Invercargill, has been promoted to the rank of sergeant observer. At a meeting of the management committee of the Southland Cricket Association last evening a letter was received from the New Zealand Cricket Council expressing regret at the death of the president of the association, Mr J. S. Brass, and extending sympathy with Mr Brass’s relations.

Major W. G. Tweedy, of Timaru, has arrived in the Middle East and has begun duty as New Zealand Red Cross Commissioner.

Warm tributes were paid to the work of Major Harvey Turner, manager of the New Zealand Forces Club, when members of the staff met recently to bid him farewell. Major Turner had been in charge of the club for the last year. He has resigned for reasons of health and will return to New Zealand. Major-General Sir Bernard Freyberg expressed his appreciation of the invaluable work Major Turner had done.
