USE OF PETROL IN PRIVATE CARS

CONSERVATION URGED BY CONTROLLER No restriction exists to prevent private motorists from using petrol obtained from coupons, but supplies should be conserved, according to a statement by the Dominion. Oil Fuel Controller (Mr G. L. Laurenson) forwarded to The Southland Times in response to an inquiry. A number of motorists have been uncertain whether it was advisable for them to use petrol supplies in their possession to keep their cars mobile or whether they should retain the petrol whatever the condition of fixe cars. Appeals were made by the authorities for motorists to conserve petrol supplies, but no specific information was given. In his statement Mr Laurenson expressed the opinion that short runs to keep vehicles mobile would be reasonable. In the interest of motorists’ own security he suggested that wherever possible the reserve supply in the tanks should be kept.
